2026 national holidays: dates and observance
Eleven annual public holidays make up the US calendar. The schedule below lists the actual calendar date and, where applicable, the observed date for Miami.
| Holiday | Actual date | Day of week | Observed date (if different) |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Year's Day | 01 January | Thursday | Same |
| Martin Luther King Jr. Day | 19 January | Monday | Same |
| Washington's Birthday | 16 February | Monday | Same |
| Memorial Day | 25 May | Monday | Same |
| Juneteenth National Independence Day | 19 June | Friday | Same |
| Independence Day | 04 July | Saturday | 03 July (Friday) |
| Labor Day | 07 September | Monday | Same |
| Columbus Day | 12 October | Monday | Same |
| Veterans Day | 11 November | Wednesday | Same |
| Thanksgiving Day | 26 November | Thursday | Same |
| Christmas Day | 25 December | Friday | Same |
When a public holiday lands on a weekend
The rule is straightforward: a Saturday holiday shifts to the preceding Friday. A Sunday holiday shifts to the following Monday.
In 2026 only Independence Day triggers a shift. Christmas Day lands on a Friday, so no change.
Common error in tools: Many online calendars and scheduling apps show the actual date but ignore the observed date. If a tool says banks are closed on Saturday, July 4, that is incomplete. Government offices and most financial institutions in Miami will be closed on Friday, July 3, and open on Saturday, July 4.
2027 note: Juneteenth (19 June) lands on a Saturday and will be observed on Friday, 18 June. Independence Day (4 July) is a Sunday and will be observed on Monday, 5 July. Christmas Day (25 December) is a Saturday and will be observed on Friday, 24 December. New Year's Day 2028 (1 January) is a Saturday and will be observed on Friday, 31 December 2027.
How public holidays affect Miami business hours
Closures apply to:
- All government offices (Social Security, passport offices, courts)
- United States Postal Service (no mail delivery)
- Most banks and credit unions (check your branch; some in-store banks may differ)
- Stock markets (NYSE, NASDAQ) are closed
What stays open: Most retail stores, supermarkets, restaurants, and entertainment venues in Miami operate on normal or reduced hours. Miami's tourism-driven economy means many businesses stay open even on major public holidays. Check specific venues.
Miami-Dade County government offices and public schools follow the national schedule but may add local holidays (see below).
Miami-specific celebrations and their timing
Miami-Dade County observes additional days that are not national holidays:
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January) is also a county holiday.
- Good Friday (3 April 2026) is a county holiday. The national government does not observe it.
- Veterans Day (11 November) is a county holiday.
- Thanksgiving and Christmas are county holidays.
Good Friday is not a national holiday. Some private businesses and schools in Miami close or operate on shortened hours.
Public holidays and DST: any overlap?
Daylight saving time in 2026 starts on Sunday, 8 March (clocks forward at 02:00) and ends on Sunday, 1 November (clocks back at 02:00).
No public holiday falls on a DST transition date in 2026. The closest overlap: DST ends the Sunday before Election Day (Tuesday, 3 November). Veterans Day on 11 November falls after the clocks have fallen back, so it occurs during Eastern Standard Time.

Practical takeaways for Miami
- July 4 weekend: The observed holiday on Friday, 3 July means a three-day weekend for government employees and bank customers. Plan for Friday closures.
- Mail delivery: No USPS mail on Friday, 3 July. Private carriers (UPS, FedEx) may operate on modified schedules.
- Banking: If you need to complete a transaction that requires a bank, do it by Thursday, 2 July.
- County services: Miami-Dade offices follow the national observed date for Independence Day. They are also closed on Good Friday.
- 2027 early planning: Christmas Day on Saturday means observed Friday, 24 December 2027. New Year's Day on Saturday means observed Friday, 31 December 2027. Two consecutive years with Saturday holidays.
